Pinene [pie-neen]: a type of gaseous terpenoid, specifically a monoterpene, that is found in essential oils of plants. It is known for its role in deterring herbivores and contributes to the fragrance and aroma of plant products.

What is it

Pinene is one of the most common terpenes found in nature. Just like its name suggests, it is a prominent terpene in pine trees and other conifers, boasting a piney scent and woody, herbal flavor when consumed via cannabis. Pinene is so prevalent in nature that scientists have categorized it into two separate varieties—alpha-pinene and beta-pinene, or a-pinene and b-pinene for short. Both are similar, though b-pinene tends to have a more hoppy, herbal profile while a-pinene maintains that typical pine tree scent.

Medicinal and Practical Uses

Pinene is a bronchodilator, meaning it helps open up the airways and dilate the lungs, as well as protect the lungs from viral infections. It is also anti-inflammatory and anti-anxiety, and has been shown to actually be neuroprotective. For this reason, cannabis strains high in pinene can cause negative experiences for those suffering from PTSD.

As always, consult your doctor before incorporating pinene into your wellness routine.

History

Pinene is the main compound present in turpentine, which is an ingredient in Vick’s Vaporub, and helps provide that soothing, minty sensation. In the early 1800s, turpentine was treated as a cure-all for a plethora of ailments, including tape worms. It is now known to be a toxic substance when ingested and is no longer recommended by medical professionals. Nowadays, turpentine is more often used as a wood treatment. Pinene is also present in pine tar, which can treat skin conditions like eczema when applied topically, and is even used in baseball to make the bats grippier.

Where is it naturally occurring outside of cannabis?

  • Pine trees, obviously, and other conifers
